Narcis Book Club // #GirlBoss

On the 20th of each month, Narcis Blog will feature a new book accompanied by a short review. If you know me personally you will know that I enjoy reading a lot, in fact I probably mentioned that fact multiple times on the blog already. Which is why there will now be some book reviews, though I really hate the word review for a book, so instead let's call it a book club of sorts, yea? And to make it even more of a book club, I would appreciate your involvement and book recommendations for each month. I decided to kick things off with a blogger favourite, and that is #GIRLBOSS.
#GIRLBOSS includes Sophia’s story, yet is infinitely bigger than Sophia. It’s deeply personal yet universal. Filled with brazen wake-up calls (“You are not a special snowflake”), cunning and frank observations (“Failure is your invention”), and behind-the-scenes stories from Nasty Gal’s meteoric rise, #GIRLBOSS covers a lot of ground. It proves that being successful isn’t about how popular you were in high school or where you went to college (if you went to college). Rather, success is about trusting your instincts and following your gut, knowing which rules to follow and which to break.

Even though the title of book targets a more female orientated audience, I believe that absolutely anyone will benefit from the contents of this book. From the captivating memories of Sophia Amuroso's early life to the brilliant and honest advice on how to get your own business running, and even just straight up life advice that will help you get back on your feet. #GirlBoss has it all and then some more.
Personally I'm not a huge fan of autobiographies, and am much more interested in fictional characters, however Sophia challenged that with her captivating writing and a very interesting life that she led up to this point and probably even after. She went from multiple jobs to not having a job at all and just winging it all the way to where she is now, the main girl boss. When no one believed in her, she worked hard to make them realise that she could in fact do it, and her main point is that I, and you, can do it too! No where in the book she gives you shortcuts because there are none, and she makes that very clear. Her success in her life wasn't something that was delivered to her, and she strongly emphasises that if you want to be a, what she calls, GIRLBOSS, you have to work hard for it too. That is something that made me love the book, it was her honest voice, and the fact that #GIRLBOSS isn't just some sort of guide book that promises to turn you into a CEO and millionaire over night. And that is what made this book stand out to me. No bullshit, no shortcuts, just cold facts.
When we watch these celebrities on our TV screens, the fashion designers during fashion week, we never really think about how much effort and work it took for them to get where they are now, where we see them. Most of the times we even say "they're so lucky" when in fact, in most cases at least, luck had not much to do with it. And in #GIRLBOSS we are reminded of the fact that if you want something, you have to stand up on your own two feet and get down and dirty. Don't be afraid to do work that you otherwise wouldn't do, because every job and every opportunity might lead you to where you need to go, where you want to go. Sophia wrote how every job she ever had, no matter how boring and not stimulative at the time, has taught her something important that helped her get to where she is now. And I believe that not only is this book incredibly inspiring just because of that, but also because the book features many other inspiring people that share snippets of their life stories.

What I learned most from the book is that it's important to learn from everything in your life, whether that be repeating a year in college, or being dumped by your partner, or even getting fired from a job; you have to take it all in, and learn from it. That and the importance of working hard for your future and not expecting any shortcuts. So thank you Sophia Amuruso, thank you for this brilliantly written book, and thank you for sharing your life story in order to help and inspire others.

Have you read #GIRLBOSS? What was your opinion on it? And last but not least, share some book recommendations.
